Win/wins are SO much better
The Lord gave this message to Jonah son of Amittai: “Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh…” But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord.
— Jonah 6: 1 and 3, NLT
My friend Becca had it easy. Or maybe I should say my friend Becca had it obvious. As an eight- or nine-year-old, she performed the sacrament of communion for the first time. To be accurate, she gave communion to her stuffed animals, but still (or maybe oh, yes), her career was pegged.
The same may well be true for a certain child in our house. On Easter at the age of nine, my protégé argued the origin of sin on par with elite classmates blessed Becca and I had in seminary at Boston University’s School of theology.
Most of us are like Jonah, however. It’s not so obvious. Or, like me, it was NOT obvious at all! When we do get word of the work we are to do, yep, we run. Specifically, we run in the opposite direction.
But God is God. This means God sends messages, indicators, nudges, and all-out redirections. You may or may not be on a ship that violently tosses hither and yon. You may or may not ever be a big fish’s food for three days. But God has messages for you to receive. Equally (and as wonderfully), God has messages for you to give.
Share these messages earlier and than later. Why? It’s just better. Win/wins always feel good.
Prayer: You’ve got me, Lord. Now what? Amen.
