Talking like John
Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon, and they were eager to know whether John might be the Messiah. —Luke 3:15
Whoa, what is this now? Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come? How’d that happen?
The secular world around us isn’t filled with people expecting the Messiah—at least not yet. But what if I said that the world—that is the whole world—can expect the Messiah to come soon?
Am I crazy?
People certainly thought John was crazy. At the least, the polite, positive-thinking people in John’s day would agree that the locust eating, camel coat wearing, passionate prophet was a bit off.
We who are expecting the Messiah are passionate, too. After all, we who experience the wonders and the joys of our Savior are passionate about everything good, and everything that can be good. From caring for those in need (and there are many needs) to proclaiming the Word of God, we can talk as John talked. He stirred the crowds. He rallied the people. He let anyone who would listen know what we know—that Jesus Christ IS good. That life with Jesus Christ is fantastic, amazing, and filled with hope IS a message that draws all people to expectancy.
Let’s keep talking. And talking. And talking. And rallying. And stirring. And caring for those in need. And living each day in the assurance of knowing that Jesus Christ IS good.
As we are doing this, we can also expect, anticipate, and continue to live into the amazing and fulfilling message that the Messiah is again coming to us soon.
PRAYER: Jesus, as you had John baptize you, have us continue to speak to everyone with passion, promise, and our praises to you. Like John, help us talk to everyone about what you’ve done, who (and what) you are, and what you will do. Amen.
