A lesson from these “Get-er-done” guys
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33
The alarm will go off. The toaster will work. The car will start. These are things we count on. When we have trouble in the world (and Christ says this is something we can count on), we will have peace. Importantly, Christ says we will not have peace in ourselves. We have peace only in Christ.
When the disciples had trouble in the world, they would remember their peace through their trials would not be in the circumstances they could maneuver. Inspired by and following through with Christ’s ministry, these “get-er-done” guys couldn’t fix their situations on their own. They may be able to hammer out a solution or two, but their peace would be in Christ.
The same is true today. A vacation. A winter in a warm climate. Golden years in retirement. These things may bring relaxation, but peace from these things is temporary. The peace we find in Christ is eternal. This peace withstands any plaster crack, crumbling building block, or bad foundation.
We are all under construction of some sort, especially when we ourselves get alarmed, something burns us, or the car won’t start. With Christ in this remodeling phase, we can say, “Less pieces. More peace.”
PRAYER: Christ Jesus, help us find peace in You — and You alone. Amen.
